Solar Cooker DIY
Introduction
Clean drinking water is essential for our health. Water containing bacteria or viruses can make us very sick. Unfortunately, not everybody has access to clean water from centralized water plants. However, nearly everybody nowadays has a smartphone! That’s why we developed a small device and an app which can be used with a smartphone to kill harmful bacteria in water. It could mean that people without a clean water supply can easily disinfect their drinking water and avoid getting sick.

Material List
- 1 Large box
- 1 Roll of foil
- 1 Knife to cut the box (adults only!)
- 1 Roll of plastic wrap
- 1 Sheet of black construction paper
- 1 Pair of scissors
- 1 Roll of tape
- 2 Graham crackers
- 1 Chocolate bar
- 1 Marshmallow
Instructions
- Tape the box closed.
- Ask an adult to cut a large door into the biggest side of the box.
- Line the door and bottom with foil (use tape to secure it).
- Place a small piece of black construction paper inside the box.
- Place the S’more on the construction paper.
- Cover the opening with plastic wrap (for best results, seal completely to retain heat).
- Place the box in the sun around noon (time required varied based on weather, typcially 30 min.)
- When the chocolate has melted (or is at least warm)… eat the S’more!
How It Works
Light from the sun enters the foil-lined box. The light energy from the sun is converted to heat energy, which melts the chocolate. The foil helps reflect light so more light energy is transferred to the S’more. The plastic wrap helps trap the heat inside.
